In May 2009 the Jesusita Fire came down out of the front country on Sundowner winds and into the city's foothill neighborhoods: 8,733 acres, 80 homes destroyed along with 79 outbuildings and a commercial building, 15 more homes damaged, and roughly 30,000 to 35,000 people evacuated as Mission Canyon and the Rattlesnake Canyon area emptied. Six months earlier, the November 2008 Tea Fire had ridden the same wind pattern into the city's eastern foothills, destroying roughly 106 homes on the city's side of its footprint, with damage reaching Westmont College and the Mount Calvary Monastery. Two fires, one wind, one lesson: in ember-driven events, the first five feet at each house decided outcomes street by street. That is exactly the ground Zone 0 governs.
